Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted

  • ¾ cup brown sugar

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • Optional: ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8×8-inch pan with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth.

Add the egg and vanilla extract; mix until combined.

Sift in flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir gently with a spatula until just combined.

 

Fold in chocolate chips and nuts if using.

 

Spread dough evenly into prepared pan.

 

Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown on top.

Cool for 10 minutes before slicing into squares.

Notes

  • For softer squares, bake closer to 20 minutes.
